Portland Schools Struggle with Lead in Water


Portland school officials did not notify parents after initial tests revealed Water_fountain.JPGhigh levels of lead in the schools water. Two schools tested positive for lead in the water and one school had six water faucets that had levels higher than the federal safety standard. All but two of the fixtures have been replaced. The two remaining fixtures are in a science lab and will only be used for washing. 

Superintendent Carole Smith apologized to parents in an email saying, "While PPS staff worked quickly to replace all fixtures that indicated elevated levels of lead, we did not turn off the water in those faucets and drinking fountains prior to them being replaced, and we should have." Next year's school budget has money for lead testing for the entire district
